Standar ASTM A178 mencakup tabung las dengan ketebalan dinding minimum, tahan listrik yang terbuat dari baja karbon dan baja karbon-mangan yang dimaksudkan untuk digunakan sebagai tabung ketel, cerobong ketel, cerobong superheater, dan ujung yang aman.
Ukuran dan ketebalan pipa SA178 yang biasanya sesuai dengan spesifikasi ini adalah 1⁄2 sampai 5 in. [12,7 sampai 127 mm] diameter luar dan 0,035 sampai 0,360 in. [0,9 sampai 9,1 mm], inklusif, dalam ketebalan dinding minimum.Tabung yang memiliki dimensi lain dapat dilengkapi, asalkan tabung tersebut memenuhi semua persyaratan lain dari spesifikasi ini.
